Obituary for Katherine Helen "Kay" Bergren (Rosen)

Katherine Helen Bergren May 1, 1923 - November 4, 2019 Katherine Helen Bergren (nee Rosen) second child of Peter and Helen Rosen of Brooksby Saskatchewan, was born on May 1, 1923. She passed away peacefully on November 4, 2019 in Parkland Place, Melfort Saskatchewan, where she resided since December 12, 2018.
Kay attended Freedom School completing Grade 9. She worked at home on the farm until 1940. She then went to Toronto, Ontario to work in a pressure castings factory as a machinist and a lathe operator until 1943. Kay returned home and worked in the Gronlid Cafe and Gronlid Co-op, then transferred to the Melfort Co-op where she worked until 1951. She also worked in the Fairy Glen Co-op from 1968 to 1978. Kay was an active member of the Gronlid Willing Workers from 1957 until she and Roy moved to Melfort in 2010. She was named a Life Member of the Gronlid Willing Workers Ladies Club at that time. Kay met Roy Birger Bergren of Gronlid in 1948 and they were married on October 20, 1951. They eventually moved to their own farm in 1962. Together they raised four children and enjoyed life on the farm, tending to cows, chickens, grain crops and a huge garden and flowers. Kay enjoyed family gatherings, needlepoint, embroidery, knitting, crocheting, sewing, cooking, baking, gardening and painting in acrylics. Kay was a member of the Melfort Farmer’s Market Association, participating in numerous markets, craft shows and fairs. where she sold her delicious canning, baking and beautiful artwork. She was very generous in donating her artwork to many worthy charitable organizations.
Kay is survived by her four children: James Bergren, Joyce (Wayne Claggett), Joanne (Jim High) and Byron Bergren (Cara Squair); five grandchildren: Mike Bergren, Andrea (Matt Michalezki), James Claggett (Marlene), Jonathan Claggett (Dillon Fluter), Sean Clancy (Ayoka Bubar) and three great grandchildren: Lily Claggett, Elliot Bergren, Cole Michalezki. Kay is also survived by her daughter-in-law Dorothy Bergren, siblings: Joe Rosen, Dorothy Davis, Cecile Sulewski and Marcella (Ron Brown), sisters-in-law Peggy Rosen and Anne Rosen.
Kay is predeceased by her parents: Peter and Helen Rosen, her husband Roy, siblings: Wanda, Ignace, John, Alex and Patricia and in-laws: Joan, Josie, Edward, Stanley and Eric.
