Obituary for Carl Strathdee

Carl Strathdee, born December 22, 1928, age 92 of Melfort, Saskatchewan passed away unexpectedly May 21, 2021 while residing at Newmarket Manor in Tisdale, Saskatchewan after a brief stay there from March 23, 2021. He was previously living in Melfort close to his daughter Kris Samson after he moved from Radisson many years ago. He lived most of his years in Uranium City, Saskatchewan and was well known by the community as the local owner/operator of Northern Cabs for many years. Many friends would stop in for a coffee or a game of cards if time permitted. He enjoyed going out to the cabin on Lake Athabasca and fishing whenever possible. At one time he was commercial fishing with his close friend George Michalow. He met and lived with his spouse Lynda on Jackpine Crescent and were married at the United Church just before it closed after Eldorado announced the closure of the mine. Friends who attended the wedding were Hap and Slim Cave, Mike Woloshyn and family, George Michalow and Jimmy Price. The reception was held at the Uranium City Hotel April 17, 1983. In August of 1983 they relocated to Fort Smith with Jimmy Price flying Carl, Lynda and Kris in his float plane, where he also moved to the same year.

Carl was an avid sports fan and loyal to the Toronto Maple Leafs and Toronto Blue Jays all his life, never missing a game. At one point he also played hockey at the arena in Uranium City.

He leaves behind his loving daughter Kris Samson of Melfort, granddaughters Bryana and Alyssa, and grandson Jesse who all fondly called him Papa; two great grandsons Mattieus and Daegen; his two sisters Arla Hutton of Hanover, Ontario and Catherine Ritchie of Sarnia, Ontario.

His last request was no memorial service and to be cremated and have his ashes spread over Lake Athabasca.

In lieu of flowers, the family has requested donations be made to a charity of one’s choice.
